The Starting Line
Imagine the palpable tension as over 350 runners gather at the foot of the mountains, ready to face the challenge of their lives. Among them, four women stand out, each with a clear goal: to win or to secure a top 10 position. Magdalena Boulet, Devon Yanko, Kaci Lickteig, and Anna Mae Flynn, each with their own story and determination.
Magdalena Boulet: The Champion
Magdalena Boulet, an athlete sponsored by HOKA ONE ONE and GU ENERGY LABS, is the defending champion. A mother of one, she lives and trains in the East Bay of Northern California. With an incredible road background, including a trip to the Olympics in 2008, Magdalena is ready to defend her title on the rugged terrain of the Western States.
Devon Yanko: The Redemption
Devon Yanko, also an athlete sponsored by HOKA ONE ONE, has excelled in various ultramarathon distances. This is her second attempt at the Western States 100 Mile Race, after a first attempt resulted in a DNF. In addition to running, Devon co-owns MH Bread & Butter in San Anselmo, CA, with her husband Nathan.
Kaci Lickteig: The Favorite
Kaci Lickteig, second place finisher in the 2015 race, is among the favorites for victory. Hailing from Omaha, Nebraska, she works as a physical therapist in a hospital. Her dedication and determination are ready to lead her to victory on this challenging course.
Anna Mae Flynn: The Debut
Anna Mae Flynn, from Lake Tahoe, CA, is facing her first 100-mile challenge after gaining entry through a golden ticket at the Lake Sonoma 50 Mile Race in 2016. A teacher by profession, she is a newcomer to ultramarathons but has already shown the talent needed to compete at the highest level.
An Epic Journey
These four women have come together to face the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run, an epic journey that some, including the great Ann Trason, liken to living “a life in a day.” Every step, every single kilometer, is a battle against themselves, against the terrain, and against time. And we will be here, cheering them on every step of the way.
The Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run is not just a race; it’s a challenge against the boundaries of human endurance, a test of the strength of the human spirit. We are honored to follow the exploits of these extraordinary athletes as they head into the unknown, towards glory or defeat, towards the realization of their dreams.
