A Tradition Renewed: What’s New for 2024
This year, the Reggio Emilia Marathon offers an exciting new addition: the introduction of the Reggio Emilia Half Marathon. As a veteran of this event, I can tell you that this addition will only enhance the magic of the race, making the experience accessible to fans of shorter distances. The half marathon will start from Via Togliatti in Montecavolo at 10:30 AM, a perfect time for mid-distance runners to enjoy the energy that only this day can bring.
The organization has thought of every detail to ensure a stress-free experience:
- Shuttle service from PalaBigi to easily reach the starting point.
- Spacious parking in Montecavolo for those who prefer to arrive on their own.
- Headquarters at the Mameli gymnasium, where participants will find all necessary services.
The December 8th Trio of Events: Something for Everyone
December 8 will not only be marathon day but a true celebration of running, with events for all tastes and skill levels. The schedule is rich and varied:
- Classic Marathon: Start at 9:00 AM from Piazza della Vittoria, a challenge for the most trained and determined runners.
- New Half Marathon: Start at 10:30 AM from Montecavolo, a unique opportunity to experience a half marathon in the festive atmosphere of Reggio Emilia.
- Run4Charity – Coop Alleanza 3.0: With a distance of 4.2 km, this charity run will start at 9:45 AM from Piazza della Vittoria, opening up the world of running even to beginners.
Run4Charity embodies the event’s spirit of giving back. By participating in this shorter race, runners can support local non-profit organizations. It’s inspiring to see how running can become a tool for community support and a way to share the holiday spirit through sport.
Why the Reggio Emilia Marathon is Special
Running the Reggio Emilia Marathon is an experience that holds deep meaning for many of us. It’s more than just a race; it’s a time for gathering and sharing, enriched by unique qualities that make it unforgettable. Here are a few reasons why this marathon is so special:
- The Time of Year
Running in December is a different but fascinating challenge. The cool temperatures are ideal for long distances, reducing the risk of overheating and allowing for optimal performance. The holiday atmosphere adds a touch of magic reflected in the runners’ faces and the warmth of the crowd. - The Organization
Tricolore Sport Marathon has over twenty years of experience organizing this event, and it shows in every detail. From pre-race assistance to logistical management, to bib pickup, everything is designed to create a memorable experience for runners.
Personal Memories and Tips for Participants
Whenever I think of the Reggio Emilia Marathon, unforgettable memories come to mind. If you’re considering joining this edition, let me share a few tips from my own experience to help you prepare.
- Preparation
Make sure to train with winter-appropriate clothing, as running in December requires some adaptation to the cold. I recommend doing at least one long run in conditions similar to what you might encounter on race day. And don’t forget to study the course: knowing what to expect will help you manage your energy. Pro tip: don’t overdress if you’re aiming for a personal best; if the weather is favorable, you’ll stay comfortable in a T-shirt once you warm up. - Logistics
Arriving the day before is essential to pick up your bib calmly and soak up the pre-race atmosphere. At PalaBigi, you’ll find all the essential services for runners, from showers to rest areas. It’s also important to bring warm clothing for the pre-race wait, as the time spent standing before the start can feel quite long. - Race Strategy
The start should be approached with control, especially since the cold might tempt you to start faster than usual. Remember to fuel up regularly during the race and manage your energy wisely. Save something for the final kilometers, as the cheering and final motivation will help you push through any moments of difficulty.
The Reggio Emilia Marathon: Not Just a Race, but a Running Celebration
Whether you choose to take on the full marathon, the new half marathon, or Run4Charity, you’ll find impeccable organization and a unique atmosphere in Reggio Emilia on December 8. The Parmigiano Reggiano Trophy is much more than a race; it’s a celebration of running that unites tradition, sport, and solidarity.
I haven’t yet decided if I’ll be at the starting line this year, but I know that, whatever happens, the Reggio Emilia Marathon will continue to be a reference point in Italian running.
And you, will you be there on December 8? Which of the three distances have you chosen?
Happy running to everyone!
