To all running enthusiasts,
Today, I’m here to talk to you about one of the most iconic races in the world of trail running: the Western States Endurance Run. An epic adventure that traverses lands once tread by gold prospectors, now witnesses to endurance and perseverance.
On Saturday, December 2nd, at 7 AM PST (4:00 PM CET), the traditional lottery will be held to secure one of the bibs for this legendary challenge. This race is not just a run; it’s a journey through history, an opportunity to test your endurance and adventurous spirit.
Imagine being in Squaw Valley, California, where gold seekers once walked trails marked by the gold rush fever. Here, this epic competition was born. The race kicks off at 5 AM on the last Saturday of June, near the site of the 1960 Winter Olympics. From there, the route leads to the Emigrant Pass (2,681 meters), the highest point of the course, then takes you on a journey through ancient lands, including those of the Nisenan, Washoe, and other indigenous peoples whose history intertwines with the gold rush.
The trails of this race will take you through canyons, forests, rivers, and majestic peaks, culminating at the Placer High School in Auburn, after tackling a positive elevation gain of 5,500 meters and a descent of 7,000 meters. But be wary, weather conditions can play a crucial role: temperature fluctuations along the route can exceed 30°C, so prepare for anything.
To participate in the final lottery, successful completion of one of the qualifying races is necessary, granting you a chance to be selected. But that’s not all: for each qualifying race completed annually, your chances of being drawn double. However, the selection process can take time; some wait for more than eight years.
Only about 370 bibs are available each year, making this experience even more exclusive and meaningful for those fortunate enough to be selected.
The Western States Endurance Run is more than just a race; it’s a journey through history, nature, and human resilience. It’s a challenge that tests not only your legs but also your determination and unwavering spirit.
If you’re lucky enough to be chosen in the lottery, prepare for a unique journey, an adventure that will change you forever.
Good luck to all those participating in the lottery, and may the run be with you!
